Steve Mariucci Emerging as Candidate for Arkansas Job

CoachingSearch.com is reporting former NFL coach Steve Mariucci is very interested in the Arkansas coaching vacancy.  The news comes as a contradiction to what the former 49ers and Lions head coach told Dennis Dodd

of CBSSports.com.

“I just had a few phone calls from my son and few friends asking what’s going on and to be honest I hadn’t heard about (the report).  It comes as a complete surprise to me,” Mariucci told Dodd.

Mariucci hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2006 and more specifically, at the collegiate level since 1996 when he was at Cal, but he’s left the door open over the years to make a come back to the sidelines if it made sense to him.

He added“It has to be the right situation. “I haven’t ruled (coaching again) out.  I enjoy what I do now.  If something that comes up that makes sense, but I’ve had no contact with Arkansas.”

We’ll keep you posted on any developments regarding Mariucci to Arkansas, but for the meanwhile here’s some additional entertainment involving the Arkansas coaching search.

PGA golfer and Arkansas alum John Daly tweeted yesterday that Razorbacks

AD Jeff Long should consider Jon Gruden to replace Bobby Petrino:

“still strong behind Gruden as i still think he would be the man to take us to that level!”

Daly added: “Been trying to help, all is in @JeffLongUA hands & I’ve passed all info to him–if that is the route they want to go I think that Gruden would be the perfect fit! Razorback fans would welcome Gruden with open arms! I know it’s a long shot but I live for Arkansas!”

I know. I know. You’re saying the same thing I did when I heard this news- Oh Great. Here we go- John Daly…is offering advice to Jeff Long on who to hire as the Hogs’ new head coach. Let the circus begin.  We aren’t taking Daly’s tweets any more serious than you are.  I mean c’mon, how much more ridiculous does it get then JOHN DALY suggesting who to hire at Arkansas? I mean look at him (pictured above). Seriously.
